Puntland police on Sunday released a prominent Somali journalist Jama Deparani who has been in Garowe detention for more than a week. His release came as a result of a massive media campaign launched across the state.
Puntland’s human rights commissioner and MAP director Faysal Khalif have been lobbying for his release, urging government to shield journalism rights as well as Freedom of expression.
Media houses in Somalia have welcomed the move and state information minster couldn’t be reached for comment on the development. The released journalist has served 11-days in prison after he was allegedly detained for making public incitement.
